Intermediate Level

The Intermediate Level program builds upon the Basic level and further refines the skills with courses in grammar, public speaking, and reading comprehension. The courses include:

ESL III / English Language I

Students who have a basic working knowledge of English may test into ESL III / English Language I. In this course, students study vocabulary and grammar, including parts of speech, parts of a sentence, mechanics, and usage through a solid foundation in listening and reading. Students read different articles and essays with an emphasis on art-related topics as well as fiction, drama, and poetry. Students are expected to respond verbally to the readings both informally in class discussion and through formal presentations and further explore the literature through both creative and analytical writing.

English Language II

The English Language II course is usually for those enrolled in the Intermediate Level English for Artists (EFA) and English for Media Professionals (EMP) Language programs. In this course, the student will gain the confidence, know-how, and ability to prepare and deliver an effective message in a variety of different ways and for different audiences. Students learn how to conduct an interview, use visual aids during a speech, and use various methods of delivery when giving a speech. Emphasis is also placed on refining listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing skills.

Cross Cultural Communications

Cross Cultural Communication provides students with the theoretical and practical foundations needed to build and maintain positive intercultural communication and relationships. Through class discussion and role-playing, students explore the different ways in which Westerners and Chinese express themselves in terms of language usage, nonverbal styles, and modes of thinking. Students learn everyday skills such as public speaking, presentation skills, and etiquette. Students also learn media-related skills such as how to conduct successful interviews and produce media advisories and press statements. The course will also explore some of the fundamental ways in which Eastern and Western art and music differ. Assessment is based on class participation and in-class projects. This course is a requirement for the Intermediate Level EFA and EMP Language Program Certificates.

Students must pass an intermediate level English language proficiency exam in order to receive the Fei Tian English Language Program Intermediate Level Certificate. Most EFA students choose to end their language studies at this level as their English proficiency should be enough to handle most situations they will encounter in their career. They may, however, continue on to the next level if they wish. EMP students generally need to continue to hone their writing skills.
