Intermediate Level
The Intermediate Level of the Chinese Language and Culture Program includes the following courses:
Chinese Language II
This course requires satisfactory marks on a basic level proficiency test for enrollment. The course builds upon Chinese Language I and further develops students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The goal is to have students reach a moderate level of proficiency in the language. The language experi-ence is enriched by supplementary materials including videos, newspapers and magazines, and songs as well as CSL software and the Internet. By the end of the course, students should have mastered about 800 Chinese words.
Chinese History I
This is a course in which students begin to explore what it means to be “Chinese” by studying historical legends and moral concepts that form the foundations of Chinese culture. Students are given an overall chronological framework of the different dynasties that make up China’s history from the Qin dynasty through modern China. Because the course is taught primarily in Chinese, the content is kept lively and relatively simple and key concepts are also introduced in English. Please see the Chinese section of the High School Academic Curriculum for details about this course.
Students must pass an Intermediate Level Chinese language proficiency exam and/or the SAT II Subject Test in Chinese With Listening at the end of the course in order to proceed to the next level and receive the Fei Tian Chinese Language Intermediate Level Certificate.
