English Language Programs

The mission of the Program is to meet the specialized needs of professional artists and media professionals who wish to combine language studies with their artistic and professional pursuits in a vibrant and rigorous atmosphere of learning and creativity. Fei Tian provides a full spectrum of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction from beginner level to advanced to build skills in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Courses focus on building skills in listening comprehension, accent reduction, conversation, public speaking, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. All students will be placed in their appropriate levels by personal interview and placement test upon arrival. Fei Tian Academy staff carefully monitor each student's progress periodically throughout the language course and provides each student with feedback that is necessary for improvement.

The English Language Program at Fei Tian has two components:

1. English for Artists (EFA) Program

Artists who are selected through an audition process are given the opportunity to receive intensive training in the full-time English for Artists (EFA) program at the same time that they hone their art at a professional level.

The EFA program arose out of a need expressed by many artists from around the world who found their opportunities to perform and share their art in the Americas, Europe, and other English-speaking regions severely hindered by their inability to communicate fluently in the English language. Many of these artists have difficulty giving interviews or handling speaking engagements in English. However, they often find it difficult to take time from their busy practice, rehearsal, and performance schedules and daily lives to improve their English. Even when they have time, there are few resources available that can meet their specialized needs.

At Fei Tian, students learn in a bilingual environment and have ample opportunity to practice their English skills at the same time that they participate in performances, exhibits, exchange programs, workshops, and other professional productions. Qualified EFA students who are professional performing artists at Fei Tian are selected to showcase their talent in world-class shows at some of the best venues around the world. Those who enroll in the EFA program usually receive their certification upon completion of the Intermediate Level of the English Language Program.

2. English for Media Professionals (EMP) Program

The English for Media Professionals (EMP) program provides training to those who wish to perfect their writing and reporting skills in various forms of media, including print, radio, and television, especially in relation to the arts. Most of the writing courses for the EMP program are at the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Those who enroll in the EMP program usually recevie their certification upon completion of the Advanced Level of the English Language Program.
