NEW YORK—Chinese New Year in New York City will never be the same. After New York's seventh and final Chinese New Year Spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall tonight, the audience was raving.
"I think the choreography is top notch. I can tell these guys are so professional. They really put themselves into it," said Anton Venturov from New York.
New York City was the 13th city on the Spectacular's international 2007 tour. Now in its fourth year, it will visit 16 more cities around the globe and finish in April.
Approximately 28,000 people braved frigid cold and snow to see the Spectacular, which had a four-day run at Radio City. But they didn't leave empty-handed, with enthusiastic comments literally pouring out of the venue afterwards.
"I think it is very beautifully put on. The costumes, the colors, the choreography," said Yorik from New York, whose parents are from eastern Europe and who grew up in England.
The New York/New Jersey area was hit by a snowstorm and freezing temperatures the evening before the Spectacular's opening night on Valentine's Day. By the final show on Saturday, temperatures had risen and the snow was melting.
Most audience members came from the greater New York area, but some were from the other side of the country or world.
"I'd recommend the show, it was very good," said Mr. Jaw from Pittsburgh, who attended with his wife, four children, and two exchange students. They were in town for the weekend and attended the show. One of their exchange students, Su Byong commented, "I liked it!"
Yolanda Parker from Detroit, Michigan said she felt the show was very broad and covered many amazing aspects of Chinese culture. "This is just amazing, it was uplifting, very uplifting. I loved the Mongolian riders; the flowers, the water and the fish."
The show features a variety of colorful costumes, creative dance numbers, lively vocal and instrumental performances, and dramatic depictions of epic tales from Chinese history and folklore. The Spectacular aims to create a renaissance of the true, traditional Chinese culture on stage, and bring the art of the divine to life.
