Advanced Level

The Advanced Level courses are designed to bring students to a level comparable to the English proficiency level found in U.S. colleges. At this level there is greater emphasis on reading comprehension and writing with further refinement of speech. The goal at this stage is for students to achieve professional level language competency so they may communicate in a relatively sophisticated manner.

English Language III

English Language III introduces students to the variety of writing styles used in journalism and other media. The key skills of exploration, investigation, and evaluation are a primary focus. Through the course, the student should be able to: 1) demonstrate the ability to write for different audiences and for different purposes, including academic research; 2) gain skill and confidence in using the conventions of standard written English; and 3) work and write collaboratively within a designated time frame. They read newspaper and magazine articles and study television scripts in addition to studying classic novels, short stories, and essays by great writers. In addition, students learn to write various types of articles: news, features, sports, and editorials. The complexities of producing a newspaper, including layout and design, are also taught. Students practice and learn how to be responsible and ethical journalists. The course is writing-intensive and geared for advanced EMP students.

Cross Cultural Communications

Cross Cultural Communication provides students with the theoretical and practical foundations needed to build and maintain positive intercultural communication and relationships. The course is designed to prepare professional artists with the communication skills and cultural awareness needed to express their artistic intentions to the public. Through class discussion and role-playing, students explore the different ways in which Westerners and Chinese express themselves through language and nonverbal communication. The course will also explore some of the fundamental ways in which Eastern and Western art and music differ. Students learn skills in public speaking, oral presentation, etiquette, and working with the media. Students learn how to conduct successful interviews and produce media advisories and press statements. Assessment is based on class participation and in-class projects. This course is recommended for the Advanced Level English for Artists (EFA) and English for Media Professionals (EMP) Language Program Certificates.

Students must pass an Advanced Level English language proficiency exam in order to receive the Fei Tian English Language Program Advanced Level Certificate. Students in the English for Artists and the English for Media Professionals programs may choose to enroll to work toward just a Fei Tian English Language Program Certificate or they may choose to enroll for both a Language Program Certificate and an Artistic Certificate in dance, music, or fine arts.
